Homework Help

Well, the question was finally asked in class today. “Mr. Bywater, when will I ever use this?” I’m surprised it took this long for it to be asked.
So, below is a copy of a post from last year answering this question to the best of my ability.

If I had a penny for every time I’ve heard the question, “When will I ever use this?” Well, suffice it to say, I’d have a nicer car and a bigger house. Believe me, I understand that as an 8th grader, the math that you’re learning in school doesn’t always seem important to you or relavent. The truth is that later in life you won’t use much of what you learn in school but there’s no way to know today what you may or may not need to know for tomorrow, so I, as your teacher, am going to teach you what our society has decided is important for you to learn and then it’s up to you what you do with that information. While you may not appreciate it right now, that’s a big part of what makes our country such a great place to live. We’re going to give you all of the knowledge that you need to be successful in life, for free!, and then you get to choose what you do with it. There are many places in the world where you don’t get that choice! Be happy that you get to choose your own path in life and make the most of it.

I apologize for the image quality. I’m on vacation at the beach and don’t have a scanner so I took a picture of the completed study guide with my phone. Hopefully, you’ll be able to read it. If you click on the picture, then you should be able to blow it up. See you Wednesday.

We’re going to have a quiz on Tuesday on Adding/Subtracting/Multiplying/Dividing Integers. The quiz will be very similar to the worksheet that we were doing in class on Friday. We’ll finish/review Friday’s worksheet on Monday and then plan for the quiz on Tuesday. If you have any questions, let me know.

Ok, I think I finally figured out this facebook thing. You should be able to go to my page on facebook and “Like” it and then you’ll see on facebook whenever I update this site. Woohoo!

So, your job is to see if this all works and let me know. You should be able to go to facebook and sear for “BywaterMathBlog” or you can go directly to my page at  www.facebook.com/BywaterMathBlog

Ok, I’m not 100% sure this is going to work but I’m hopeful. I’ve created a page on Facebook called “Mr. Bywater’s Math Blog.” I believe that if you search for that page and select “Like” then I will be able to send notes to you on facebook letting you know when  I update the blog. If it works correctly, then I won’t be able to see your personal stuff on facebook and you won’t be able to see mine. So, give it a try and let me know if this works or not.

I have regular help sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:15 to 9:00and if you can’t make those days or times, then just ask me and we’ll work something out. You can also ask questions on this site if that’s easier for you. I want to see each of you succeed this year but I need you to ask for help when you need it.
